Every morning I wake up on

The wrong side of capitalism

Sloe Gin

Apparently, sloes (find them for free in a hedge near you) are a good way of turning cheap nasty gin into something drinkable. You need quite a lot of sugar, but I reckon it’s still a good investment. I am trying it with vodka, too, and will hopefully remember to record the results.

I believe that only works in the rural idyll that is Thetford.

  2. Well, I thought your website was lacking a bit of rural idyll. More updates soon on gathering wild mushrooms, frolicking in the fields and forecasting the weather from holly berries.
PS Apparently, the cheaper the gin, the better the result. Whether this applies to my economy Tesco gin, which by its own admission is water added to industrial alcohol and flavourings, remains to be seen.

  3. I have some spare rural idyll. We quite often see people carrying wild mushrooms here, though, as Charlotte pointed out, you never actually see them eaing them. So they could be carrying anything around.

  4. Well, we have been picking, carrying and eating wild mushrooms. Mostly wood blewits, which are an attractive purple colour underneath, though puffballs, slippery Jacks, parasol mushrooms and the brilliantly-named amethyst deceivers have made an appearance too. The downside (apart from the risk of a slow and painful death if you pick the wrong one) is that some are full of maggots, which are never nice things to confront as you are preparing breakfast.
