The wrong side of capitalism

Scoop!

The Wrong Side of Capitalism’s international network of philosophy paparazzi have come up with the goods: pictures of Žižek’s wedding, from some kind of Argentinian Hello equivalent.

Apparently, Žižek got cold feet and fled just before the wedding. Luckily, his fiancée’s parents are lacanians, so they sent some heavies to make sure Žižek didn’t give up on his desire.

Lena - I’ve heard conflicting reports about Ms Hounie’s intellectual stature. Well, she’s a graduate student, or possibly a PhD by now, so presumably she’s by no means dumb. But I’ve heard reports she’s a real genius, and also reports that, erm, she’s not. I suppose it’s really none of my business, but I’ve been perverted by celebrity culture.

  26. Never underestimate man’s roots. White suit, aka “belo odelo” holds a very special place of prestige in the former Yugo-culture(s). It is reserved for folk/pop-stars that started out in the gutter (roadside bar on the highway Belgrade-Nis, so called Ibarska magistrala), and climbed to the glory. White suite is Balkaniana in all its splendour. Zizek’s nod to the glorious predecessors who made it to the top with songs celebrating drunkenness, cursing feminine beauty and cruelty, and crying for maternal love.

  43. Congratulations to Slavoj on this great accomplishment. I don’t know where you all get off trying to denigrate a man whose intellect none of you are likely to match, but as George Bernard Shaw put it, those who can, do. (Those who can’t, teach, or in this case, preach). The girl is beautiful and so is Slavoj’s mind - and if he brings her just a fragment of the enjoyment he brings his readers, they’re set for a good tenure together. That’s all we can know and presume, and, on that basis, I wish them all the best. I only hope I can pick up women of that calibre when I reach his age… but then maybe knowing something about Lacan (and Zizek) wll help?

  45. Must we thereby not deduce that Zizek is a man who has not ceded on his desire, who has gone all the way? Grimacing in his white marriage suit, he represent psychoanalytic ethics on the move. The notion of “persevering in desire” has been thoroughly conquered here; to the subsiding past marriage, he opposes the aphrodisiac virtues of tomorrow’s marriage. No contradiction between life and thought, this marriage leads back to a desire that projects, and projects itself; to a desire dinintegrated by hope.
By inculcating us with a horror of extravagant, pathetic language, Zizek has made a hundred sublimities vulgar. If Zizek plans a book on how this woman won him over or he her, their love should equally be treated harshly, promosed a perilous analysis. I would look forward to such an episode in autobiography.

  46. AT FIRST I THOUGHT THAT THE WEDDING OF THE FAMOUS LACANIAN ZIZEK WITH A GIRL CALLED ANALIA WAS SOME KIND OF PSYCHOANALITICAL JOKE,THE KIND OF JOKE YOU CAN FIND IN HIS BOOKS.

AFTER THAT I SPECULATED WITH THE POSSIBILITY OF A PUBLICITY COMPAIGN OF THE WORLDWIDE LACANIAN SECT AND SECTARIAN ACADEMIC PUBLISHING HOUSES LIKE “VERSO” AND “ROUTLEDGE” AS A PART OF THEIR MEDIAMINDED STRATEGY TO MAKE THAT MIXTIFYING HODGE-PODGE OF PSYCHOANALYSIS AND PHILOSOPHY IN WHICH THEY SPECIALISE MORE GLAMOROUS.

FINALLY I SET TO CONCLUSION THAT ZIZEK IS ,IN SPITE OF ALL HIS INTELLIGENCE, A SIMPLE OPPORTUNIST.
HE SPEAKS OF RADICAL ACTS , LENIN AND ST. PAUL BUT THE FACT THAT HE CHOOSES FOR HIS HABITAT THE WEALTHY ARGENTINIAN FAMILIES IS AT LEAST SOMETHING THAT NEITHER LENIN NOR ST. PAUL WOULD DO.

SO ÉZIZEK IS ALL EMPTY PREACHING,DOUBLE-TALK,AND I THINK THAT IN PHILOSOPHY HE IS THE EQUIVALENT OF TONY BLAIR IN POLITICS-BIG AND LOUD AND CLEVER LIER.

HIS BOOK ON DELEUZE IS A PURE BULLSHIT AND IT SEEMS THAT HE EVEN DIDN’T READ ONE WHOLE BOOK OF THE GREAT FRENCH PHILOSOPHER (WHY WOULD HE WHEN HE WROTE A WHOLE CHAPTER IN “ENJOY YOUR SYMPTOME” ON ROSSELINI WITHOUT WATCHING ONE WHOLE FILM DIRECTED BY HIM?)
HE RECENTLY SAID THAT IN HIS WRITING TEAM ARE WORKING 5 PEOPLE SO IT EXPLAINS WHY THE WHOLE FRAGMENTS OF SEVERAL PAGES ARE RECYCLED FROM ONE BOOK TO ANOTHERÉFOR CHRIST’S SAKE THE GUY IS NOT EVEN WRITING HIS OWN STUFFÉ
    WHO ARE HIS GHOSTWRITERS?
WHY NOBODY CRITICISE LOUDLY THE ZIZEK’S OBVIOUSLY WEAK BOOK ON DELEUZE?
WHY HIS BOOKS THAT SHOULD PROMOTE THE IDEAS OF THE LEFT AND THAT SHOULD BE ACCESIBLE TO THE UNDERPRIVILEDGED CLASSES ARE SO EXPENSIVE?

I THINK THAT IT IS TIME FOR THE REAL RADICAL ACT-TO FORM “ANTI-ZIZEK LEFT LEAGUE” IN WHICH ALL THE PEOPLE WITH THE IDEALS OF THE LEFT POLITICS COULD FIGHT AGAINST INFLUENCE OF ZIZEKIAN VIRUS WITHIN LEFT INTELECTUAL CIRCLES AND SPIRALS.

I OFFER HERE MY EMAIL ADDRES (borismailer@yahoo.com) FOR ALL INTERESTED IN FIGHT AGAINST ZIZEKISM TO CONTACT ME AND TRY TO FORM ON THE INTERNET A REASONABLE FORCE AGAINST TABLOID COMUNISM.

Why Zizek did not write a word about free open source movement and projects such as Wikipedia on internet? Because he is big fat capitalist svine making profits from his leftist texts about his truth, but the Real Truth of his leftism is the price of his books. Wikipedia on the other hand is for free!

  61. Ok,first of all,Boris thanks, you may be right, but it sounds too me there’s always more behind the scene like Zizek usually wants to pretend (and that’s how he’s made his living so far, isn’t it?). So maybe it isn’t giving as much money anymore and had to resort to choripan. The problem is choripan will never be as suusceptible of becoming a symbolic object like hamburgers, even though french bread and a chorizo inside makes for a lot of lucu-brication:

    Choripan
    Ingredientes
    1 Chorizo

My theory is…Zizek is going to wait until comments in this message board are as many as to start a new book on the power of gossip among intelectuals. He would probably take messages and classify them according to academic background, and then take Bordieu (without reading any of his books) and describe the evolution of the “distinguished” academia in the 21st century.

And what would Analia think of all this? and her parents? and Lucía? Would they organize visits to the Quinta where they celbrated the wedding?… Slavoj, please, keep me posted…

  66. I’m a voyeur like the rest of you so I googled to get the scoop on Zizek’s wedding.

Even more interesting than the pictures are the comments from the petty, pseudo-intellectual types who apparently despise Slavoj. I suppose it’s hard to take that there are people like Zizek out there who write great books, who are really committed to what they are doing, who make a good living from their efforts, who inform and inspire the scholarly work of so many others, and who at the same time even garner (certainly unsolicited) a bit of celebrity status as well. It’s hard not to be envious—perhaps Zizek really does have access to some secret enjoyment far exceeding anything we mere mortals could ever imagine! I must say, however, the fact that there are those who actively hate good old Slavoj comes to me as a great relief. It really would be sickening if everybody loved him—moreover it would indicate that he was losing his edge. Zizek is not about a neutral position—he is either to be loved or hated.

So, my voyeuristic curiosity is satisfied–Slavoj landed a young and beautiful bride (good for him!). What really matters is that Zizek is one of the few people who has managed to keep coming up with new and original critical theory by doing the same thing over and over—that is by maintaining a sustained dialogue with Lacan. Zizek seems to be one of the few thinkers of our time who is able to say anything effective in terms of the political potential of Christianity and Socialism-Leninism. More specifically he seems to be about the only person able to give us any really enlightening insights on the present situation in Iraq. All this comes of course from the fact that Zizek thinks outside of the liberal-democratic box—something easy to claim, but quite difficult to accomplish, i.e. something that requires a commitment to a systematic theory of the social and a thorough critique of the psychologistic, historicist and nominalist views that hold sway over much of academic thought.

I heard Zizek give a talk at a conference once and became all the more impressed by him. Most of the content of the talk was material I had already read in his books. What was most impressive, however, was his generosity in handling questions and comments from the audience—which on that particular occasion ranged from the mediocre to the outright clueless. Zizek handled the questions with grace and kindness—he certainly seemed more interested in teaching the audience something (through a quirky mixture of seriousness and levity) than showing how clever he is.

Anyhow Zizek is the real thing—and his work is the quilting point that keeps my thought going.

the comment posted is totally wrong, somebody asked why white suite? and the man/girl answered because it is a kind of showing splendour, reserved just for ex yugo folk singers, please do not make me laugh so much. First of all “Belo odelo” would say someone who comes from Serbia or Monte Negro, in Žužek*s case, it is incorect, the corect answer is BELA OBLEKA. Second the Ibarska magistra does not go in direction Beograd- NiÅ¡, and third Beograd is cca. 600km from the place lived. It is not the same. And the cultural diference is huge. White dress as a symbol for someone who comes from the gutter to fame is wrong. I did not hear such a thing to be faund nowere in ex Yugoslavia and trust me i know what I am talking about.

Two in the middle for the main content, one for navigation and one to entice you off to other exciting features. Julie obviously takes up the main content and features column. I’m hanging on in the navigation column.

So how would Zizek see this. I don’t think there’s a conceivable connection with a Hitchcock film. However the main content area will be Ego (mans usual being/state) with the features column Superego (the infantile internalising of parental authority) and the navigation, Evil. Heavily influenced by Julie he’d see me desperately hanging to the edge of the family but rigorously trying to control it.

So there you have it - our bed deconstructed. Thank you Mr Zizek, I’d be delighted to hear how things are going in your bed with the young intellectual you just married.

For Julie’s picture of Zizek see: Zizek had been discussing The Matrix where there was a choice of two pills but he wanted another.

  75. Congratulations. You’re both beautiful and productive.

Selfishly, I hope the marriage leads to further ideas, philosophy, books and essays. I’m looking forward to your future work. Thanks.

  76. Original masturbators of inteligence proudly anounce their next victory over realistic nothingness. Wedding is an act of acting and those who dont make it in the movies make it in popular loonies. I give both roles that these two play gold medal for being crazy.

  77. I just came across this site. I like it.

Zizek is a fool who knows virtually nothing about philosophy - and possibly even less about pyschoanalysis, Lacanian or otherwise. He does know quite a bit about The Matrix though. I’m not a fan of Lacan but I know a few Lacanians and an increasing number of them are getting fed up of his generalisations and general inanities.

He is very productive: 50 books and counting, I hear. That’s because he has the confidence of the ignorant. Read one book of his (and I’ve stupidly read several) and you’ve read them all. His witless transmogrification of every subtlety and difference in the arts and philosophy into pop Hegelian and Lacanian gruel is not just lazy and wrong - it is bound to be popular for those looking for readymade answers to explain their world and to justify their actions and prejudicies. In this way, he is the Henry Ford of philosophy: you can have any colour as long as it’s black. And it leaves everyone stuck in gridlock. No wonder he loves The Lack etc: he must symbolise a space outside the fug of his bullshit.

The fact that he is one of the most well-known and widely-read “philosophers” working today suggests that this is not a great time for academia and criticism. The Age of Idiots has finally arrived.

Having said all that, I don’t give too much of a shit about his marrying some pretty, aristocratic Argentinian girl. Good luck to him. He may or may not be following his desire, but he seems to be enjoying himself at least. Perhaps love will release him from his Rightful Opinions and save us from them.

Best wishes, Slavejoy. Now fuck off out off it.

  78. Talking about intellectual celebrity gossip: does anyone know if the composer Thomas Ades married this Israeli dude Tal Rosner?
I am sure I read somewhere but can’t find any proof on the internet. What did their civil ceremony look like? did they wear white? I just have to know. Someone please help!!!!

  80. Dear ‘Hitchcock Chick’
In answer to your question about whether Thomas Ades married Tal Rosner..Yes he did. He married him on the 5th of january 2006 in a lovely ceremony in Marylebone High Street town hall. They looked beautiful together and wore fantastic suits in dark (not white).
I was Tom’s best woman. What a lovely day it was.
    Hope that helps.
