The wrong side of capitalism

Unexpected Sunderland accent

Paris Hilton’s genius has always been as an example of bourgeois excess – a kind of perfect pointlessness that isn’t even an aristocratic sovereignty or a Bataillean general economy (Paris Hilton as voyou désÅ“uvré? Sounds like a Thesis You Should Write). So she’s rather ruined things by releasing a fairly good pop reggae record [MP3]. What with this and the last Sugababes album, the Ace Of Bass comeback can’t be far away.

Even more unexpected, though, is that she’s also recorded a track that sounds a great deal like Kenickie (well, if there’d always been a disco element to their music, anyway). Admittedly, there’s no actual Sunderland accent, but her vocal stylings are remarkably reminiscent of a young Lauren Laverne [MP3].

  1. nooo! it’s actually really bad! it sounds like kingston town but worse. and her vocals mixed so weirdly (presumably to hide the fact she can’t sing).

  2. yeah, agree about the badness of the Hilton track - come on, Tim!I know you’re wistfully thinking of Ace of Base here, but it’s not a patch on that. She needs to have badly garbled lyrics, faux-pathos and a kooky Swedish accent for starters. Very good pic tho.

  3. I’ve been listening to Ace of Bass a fair amount recently, and of course you’re right that Paris Hilton isn’t a patch on them. Indeed, whenever I listen to pop dance music from the mid-90s, I’m bemused by it’s artificiality and (as in the case of “All That She Wants”) it’s otherworldliness.

Paris Hilton also has a highly mediocre hip-hop track; but the aforementioned Kenicke-go-italo-disco track is really fucking good.

    More pictures of bourgeois decedance.
